A little history
Long associated with the Principality of Monaco, Menton became definitively French in 1861. Winter tourism and the arrival of the railway in 1869 reshaped the town. Hotels, villas and gardens joined the older streets, welcoming international visitors. The Winter Palace belongs to this chapter of Riviera history.
Your first walk
Begin around the covered market, then make your way into the old town and up to the square outside Saint-Michel-Archange Basilica. Take your time on the steps and choose a comfortable time of day. Continue down towards Les Sablettes, where the waterfront offers another view of the town.
Art lovers can consider the town hall’s wedding room, decorated by Jean Cocteau, subject to the town’s visiting arrangements. Check each Cocteau venue separately when planning: opening arrangements may differ.
Leave some time unplanned
Spend the morning around the market and old town, enjoy a relaxed lunch, then choose between a cultural visit and a walk by the water. With young children or in hot weather, reduce the part of the route involving steps.
Return to Terrasse d’Azur for an evening overlooking the sea. Keep another day for the gardens, with time to enjoy them properly.
