A Belle Époque address
Construction began in 1901 under architect Albert Tournaire, and the hotel opened on 1 January 1903. The two dates mark different stages in the building’s beginnings. Modern comforts were part of the appeal of these grand hotels, alongside their architecture and setting.
The residence’s own historical account names John D. Rockefeller and King Rama V of Siam among its guests. These names suggest the international reach of the Riviera at the time. They are attributed here to that local account, without identifying any particular apartment as their accommodation.
War and a new chapter
The Second World War interrupted the building’s role as a place of leisure. The town’s history records Italian and German occupation, followed by the presence of Canadian military personnel at the Liberation. After the war, the building housed a cultural centre before becoming apartments in the late 1950s. The available material does not establish a detailed account of wartime damage to the palace itself.
